Editing…how not to hate it.
The number one thing I hear when I tell people I’m writing a book is generally, “It’s always been my dream to write a book!” or “I’ve started writing, but never see it through”. I wish I didn’t know EXACTLY how they feel. After that introduction, I’m going to talk about editing–the hardest part of writing any manuscript. Look at me, telling the masses (ha, yeah, my 4 subscribers!) that editing is the most important part of writing and I loathe it. Back to the topic.
Recently, I decided to research an editing tool or software that would help me complete this manuscript. I realized that while I have an editor I wanted to give them the best edited version of my manuscript that I could provide. Tired of the frustration and time consuming ways I was editing this helped SO much.
MEAT & POTATOES (or, the WHAT):
AutoCrit is an online editing software that breaks down your manuscript or essay into parts. When you first upload your work you can start by downloading or running a summary report, which can be downloaded or printed as a .pdf. This is an example of what it will look like…yep I got a score of 81.83. This score reflects many different aspects of your work like pacing, repetition, dialogue, etc. We’ll cover more of what the score means later.
This Summary Report is just the beginning. The report is easy to read and user friendly. Graphs, tables, and many other data illustrations make the content easily understood.
After you’ve perused through your summary report, head back to the main page and familiarize yourself with alllll the tabs! I always start left to right when editing, but some examples include: Pacing & Momentum, Dialogue, Strong Writing, etc. The main problem I faced in my most recent manuscript was POV (point of view). AutoCrit pointed out the sections of my manuscript that didn’t flow well and needed work. Seriously, this is so fast compared to the “read your whole manuscript over and over”, which I still recommend, but now you can do it without getting sidetracked.
HOW MUCH: I happened to stumble upon AutoCrit when they were running a special, it was $1 for the first two weeks! They have a FREE option if you want to start there, but it’s $30/mo for their premium services–WELL WORTH IT!
WHY: Raise your hand if you loathe editing! There’s your reason. It takes the guesswork out and saves you from future headaches! By the way, no one asked me to write this and I earn nothing from you choosing AutoCrit. I just wish someone would’ve told me about this years ago.
